Clery Act

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act, is a federal law that requires all U.S. colleges and universities (including foreign campuses of U.S. institutions), both public and private, participating in federal student aid programs to maintain and disclose certain crime statistics and campus security/fire information. The Clery Act mandates requirements for incidents of sexual violence and emergency situations.

Why is the Clery Act important?

The Clery Act is named in memory of Jeanne Clery, a LeHigh University student who was raped and murdered by a student she did not know in her campus dorm room in 1986. In the spirit of the law enacted in Jeanne’s memory, the Clery Act is designed to offer transparency to keep our campus community safe and to assist students, parents and members of the campus community in making informed decisions regarding their safety and the safety of others.

This website serves as a source of information and provides resources to help our campus community understand the Clery Act, and provide campus crime information, statistics and to support the safety initiatives at Jackson State University.

The Clery Act requires institutions:

  • Collect, classify, and count crime reports and statistics related to crime.
  • Issue timely warnings and campus alerts for Clery crimes that represent an ongoing threat to the safety of students or employees, or emergency notifications upon confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees.
